The brand new Christmas CD from Toby Keith is called A Classic Christmas.
Released on Show Dog Nashville, this 2-CD set has Toby singing the Christmas songs that you know and love. With 10 tracks per CD, he covers the fun, Christmas favorites like “Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow” and “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree.” He also touches on the spiritual side of the season with songs like “Away In A Manger” and “O Little Town Of Bethlehem.” This is one that you’ll want to add to your Christmas play list.
There are a lot of new Christmas CD’s coming out this holiday season. And one of those is the new Christmas CD by Toby Keith called A Classic Christmas. A 2-disc set that includes 20 Christmas favorites. The over all tone of these CD’s is a much softer sounding Toby Keith. Backed by strong piano, guitars, fiddles, banjo and drums, this CD is really a joy to listen to.
The first CD contains 10 contemporary Christmas favorites that everyone should know. The disc starts off with a really soft, slow rendition of “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.” “Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow” will have you dancing around the room with it’s fun honky tonk rhythm. That same feeling is found in the song “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree.”
The nice thing about the songs on this CD is that whether it’s an up tempo song like “Frosty The Snowman” or something a little slower like “I’ll Be Home For Christmas,” none of these songs are intrusive or loud. They have a fun, old fashioned country feel to them. Other songs on this CD are, “White Christmas,” “The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire,” “Silver Bells,” “Winter Wonderland” and a cover of “Please Come Home For Christmas” originally released in 1976 by The Eagles.
Volume two of Toby Keith’s A Classic Christmas takes on a more religious, spiritual feel. This CD also includes 10 tracks. The disc starts off with the song “The Little Drummer Boy.” The most widely recognized version of this song was done by the Harry Simeone Chorale. And backed by a driving piano, Toby takes the song “Go Tell It On The Mountain” and gives it an up-tempo gospel feel. It’s one of the two up-tempo songs on this CD. The other one is the final song on the disc “Joy To the World.”
Track 3 is “The First Noel.” While this is usually a great song, Toby’s powerful solo voice just doesn’t seem suited for this song. But as the song progresses and more instruments and vocals are added, it does improve.
He does recover nicely on “O Come All Ye Faithful.” Other selections on this CD are, “Silent Night,” “Away In A Manger,” “We Three Kings,” “O Little Town Of Bethlehem” and “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.”
While most artists are releasing Christmas CD’s that have 10 or 12 songs on them, A Classic Christmas is really refreshing. The songs are straight forward without a lot of fancy studio tricks. It’s a nice addition to his 2000 release Christmas to Christmas.
This is a CD that every Toby Keith fan will enjoy playing for many a Christmas yet to come.
